Symantec files 8 piracy suits
Symantec pursues distributors of counterfeit software.
Symantec has revealed that it has filed civil lawsuits against eight US and Canadian companies accused of
selling counterfeit copies of its software.
Symantec's claims against the companies include trademark and copyright infringement,
fraud, unfair competition, counterfeit documentation, trafficking, and false advertising. The security vendor is seeking
a trial by jury for each of the cases, and damages from each of the companies ranging from $4m to $10m.
Symantec's own undercover investigators (or 'brand protection task force') managed to purchase
counterfeit versions of Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks, pcAnywhere
and Symantec AntiVirus Small Business Edition from the accused: Acortech (CA), mPlus (CA), Logical Plus (NY),
SoftwareOutlets.com (FL), Rowcal Distribution (CA), Global Impact, Inc. (FL), Directron.com (TX) and eDirect Software, (Canada).
