Popular sites carrying Javascript attacks
Superbowl stadium among many hosting malware attack.
Malicious Javascript has been planted on numerous legitimate websites over the weekend, attempting to take advantage
of known flaws in Windows to download and activate keylogger and backdoor trojans on machines which browse
the sites.
An initial report was released on Friday by Websense, warning of an attack found embedded in the site of
the Dolphin Stadium, host of the Super Bowl held on Sunday and so subject to heavy traffic in the lead-up to the
popular game. The Websense alert,
here, warned that the site remained
infected and urged recipients to avoid visiting until the attack, which uses the flaws detailed in Microsoft
advisories MS06-014 and MS07-004, had been removed.
Since then a number of other domains have been found to be playing host to the same or similar attacks.
A SANS Internet Storm Center diary entry, here,
records a list of domains found to be hijacked and linked to the same attack, many of which appear to be related to
medical care. While many have been cleaned and some of the hosting domains taken down, it is thought the attack could
still be active in places.
