Man sentenced for 911 Trojan
Louisiana man gets six months behind bars
A Louisiana man has been sentenced to six months imprisonment and ordered to pay Microsoft more than $27,000
after he admitted sending a Trojan that dialled 911, the US emergency number, without the recipients' knowledge.
David Jeansonne sent the malicious code to customers of Microsoft's Web TV service (now known as MSN TV) in July 2002.
Around 20 customers received the code, at least 10 of whom launched the code and received unexpected - and unnecessary - visits from
the emergency services.
Jeansonne pleaded guilty last month to causing a threat to public safety and causing damage to computers. In addition
to the six-month prison sentence handed to him yesterday, Jeansonne will have to serve six months home
detention as part of a two-year period of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay Microsoft $27,100.
