Tutorials - How to restore system files

Procedure

The process of file recovery varies depending upon the system in use and is often required as a result of virus scares urging deletion of supposedly infected files. There are also some worms or viruses which overwrite system files with dangerous material or infect irrecoverably, requiring that system files be deleted rather than disinfected.

The following procedures can be used to restore files on Windows 98 and Windows ME.

Windows 98

• From the Start menu select run.
• A small box will appear; type SFC in this box and press the OK button.
• This brings up the System File Checker. This can either be used to check the whole system or a particular file.
• Assuming that one file is to be restored, select the Extract One File option and type in the file which is to be restored (for example, if retrieval of Sulfnbk.exe is required this will be c:\windows\command\sulfnbk.exe).
• Select the location to restore from - which will either be the original system disk (x:\win 98 where x is the CD drive letter) or, in some cases, copies of the files on the hard drive.
• The files should be extracted and restored.

Windows ME

• From the Start menu select run.
• A small box will appear; type MSCONFIG in this box and press the OK button.
• This brings up the configuration program. This can either be used to check the whole system or a particular file.
• Assuming that one file is to be resored, select the Specify System File option and type in the file which is to be restored.
• Select the location to restore from - which will either be the original system disk (x:\winme where x is the CD drive letter) or, in some cases, copies of the files on the hard drive.
• The files should be extracted and restored.
