Securing the challenge of fast humanitarian aid response
Julia Harris Oxfam
Oxfam is using everything, everywhere, and trying to maintain security, while still helping people who have been adversely
affected by natural disasters or wars.
This talk will cover some of how Oxfam does its business, the challenges of working in areas where infrastructure has
mainly disappeared, and the approach to security in such situations - sometimes even security takes a back seat to
get aid through. Not every business has to face the same challenges as Oxfam, but they may be able to learn from
our experiences.
Slow network links, dodgy generators and low levels of IT awareness all contribute to stopping the corporate designed
security software from functioning in its designed protection mode.
What does this mean to the Oxfam data network as a whole? Be prepared to be amazed at just what is considered 'normal'
for us!
The VB Seminar takes place Thursday 19 April 2012 at the OU campus, Milton Keynes, UK.
