VGrep

Malware name cross-referencing tool

VGrep is a tool provided by Virus Bulletin to enable the names given to malware by one product to be cross-referenced with those used by other products. It works by running scanners across a large collection of virus-infected files, and parsing their output into a simple text database.

Despite efforts to maintain some level of consistency, different anti-malware products frequently apply different names to the same piece of malware. It is often useful to cross-reference these names - for example when a user's anti-malware product has identified an infection, and the user needs to find out more about it, but adequate information is not provided by their security provider. Having access to the names used by other firms allows the user to investigate the available information in greater depth across a range of malware encyclopaedias, and for this sort of purpose a tool like VGrep is vital.

VGrep can be accessed online, or downloaded for local use.
