On-access scanning

Scanning files for malware when they are accessed

On-access scanning is when anti-malware software monitors file access and checks files that are opened.

On-access scanning ensures that any malicious file that arrives on a system cannot be run and is thus prevented from causing damage or data loss. Some scanners can be configured to check when files are read or written to as well as when they are executed.
