Blue screen

Blue screen indicating a fatal operating system crash

The 'blue screen', most commonly associated with Microsoft Windows but also present in some other operating systems, occurs when a program has caused a terminal error in the operating system, usually making continued functioning impossible.

The blue screen often includes some information on the nature of the crash, and may also offer the option to attempt to return to normal running. In most cases, however, only a full system reboot can ensure continued stability.
