Turkish bank fraud gang rounded up

17 arrested for thefts using data phished by Russians

A gang of 17 have been arrested in four Turkish towns after a spate of thefts from online banking accounts in the past month. They are thought to have used account data stolen by Russian hackers, leased to them for a cut in the takings from their fraud.

Three Russians, whose identities have been passed on to Interpol by the Turkish authorities, were behind the theft of thousands of sets of online banking credentials using spyware and phishing techniques. The data was then given to the team of Turkish criminals in return for a 10% share of the funds they filtered form the accounts of unsuspecting victims.

The escalation in online bank fraud in Turkey was first noticed in January, and led to a police operation which tracked down the culprits. The gang are thought to have made over $300,000 from their crime spree. The Russian data providers have yet to be apprehended.
