Microsoft announces bumper patch release

12 fixes for Patch Tuesday, including one for security products.

Microsoft has released its usual advance notification of the contents of next week's Patch Tuesday security patches, with a total of 12 fixes expected. At least four of these are labelled 'critical', including one fix covering several of the company's anti-virus and anti-spyware products.

Five of the patches affect the Windows operating system itself, while another two cover Microsoft Office products. The security product patch affects anti-virus products Windows Live OneCare, Antigen and Forefront, and anti-spyware tool Windows Defender, which was bundled with the recent release of Windows Vista.

'The two patches for Office are perhaps the most welcome,' said John Hawes, Technical Consultant at Virus Bulletin. 'Hopefully at least some of the various Word issues that have left users exposed for so long are finally going to get fixed. It may be too much to hope that they'll have had time to cover the recent Excel vulnerability.'

Microsoft has occasionally withdrawn patches between the initial announcement and release. Full details of the notification can be found here.
