SMS spam goes down Down Under

Anti-spam code of conduct proves successful

Australia's Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman reports that a code of conduct aimed at preventing SMS spam has been highly effective - only 32 complaints about SMS spam have been filed over a three-month period.

The anti-spam code, put together by the Australian Communications Industry Forum, is enforced by the Australian Communications Authority, which has the power to impose fines of up to AUD10 million on companies that fail to comply.

While SMS spam is very different to the problem of unsolicited emails (since the sender must pay to send an SMS message), it seems that the threat of a hefty fine carries some weight.
