MS releases new Sysinternals utility
Process Monitor combines filemon, regmon into unified analysis tool.
Sysinternals, now 'a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation', has released a new system
analysis tool entitled Process Monitor, combining the functionality of its popular filemon and
regmon utilities, both of which have long been staple tools in the analysis of virus and trojan behaviour.
The first major release since Sysinternals joined the Microsoft stable, Process Monitor is
apparently completely recoded from the ground up, by kernel expert Mark Russinovich, now a Technical Fellow at
Microsoft. The freely available software adds several enhancements to the earlier tools, as well as combining
filesystem, registry and process monitors into a single interface.
'Although the new product only runs on more recent and well-patched versions of Windows, it is sure to become a
handy piece of kit for any malware researcher,' said John Hawes, Technical
Consultant at Virus Bulletin. 'The design and controls will be familiar to anyone used to the earlier incarnations, but
the simple buttons to filter registry, filesystem and process activity add great value, as do the extra monitors,
configurability and logging functions.'

here. Source code,
often made available for earlier Sysinternals products, has not been released.
