Tough week for Symantec

Security firm suffers security bug and incompatibility criticism.

After announcing on Friday the discovery of a vulnerability in its Backup Exec software, Symantec suffered press criticism when the beta of its forthcoming Norton Confidential anti-phishing software was revealed to be incompatible with current versions of Norton AntiVirus, and other security software from the firm.

VB100

Symantec has issued patches to fix the overflow problem in Backup Exec, while beta testers must uninstall any copies of Norton AV, IS, Personal Firewall or SystemWorks to try out the new technology. The anti-phishing tools are expected to be merged into the future Norton 360 all-in-one security suite.

Read about the security flaw here, and see some views of the incompatibility problem here and here. See the announcement of the vulnerability from Symantec here and apply for a beta trial of the new software here.
