International pact to fight spam
Countries join forces to declare war on spam.
Representatives from the US, the UK and Australia have signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding' (MoU) on spam.
The agreement was signed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States, along with the UK's Office of Fair Trading,
the UK's Information Commissioner, the UK's Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Communications Authority (ACA).
According to the UK's
Government
News Network, the signing of the Memorandum means that:
- Enforcement authorities in the UK, United States and Australia will be able to work
together to investigate spammers in those countries.
- Enforcement authorities across all three countries will take part in joint training initiatives to
combat spam.
- International solutions and strengthening capabilities will be developed to trace and convict
spammers.
- Cross-border enforcement against spammers will take effect.
Meanwhile, a similar pact has been signed between the
Australian IT and Communications Minister Daryl Williams and his Thai counterpart, Surapong Suebwonglee.
The agreement commits the two
countries to exchanging information about anti-spam policies and security issues.
